Dear Friend:
This holiday season we have much to be thankful for:
- Election results were finally certified in Colorado last week and Amendment 44 ended up with 41.08 percent of the vote. This means that despite stiff opposition from the Drug Czar, the DEA, the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, the governor, lieutenant governor, state attorney general, a wide range of law enforcement officials, a variety of out-of-state anti-drug extremists, and a blue book with false information, more than 2 in 5 Colorado voters still voted to make marijuana legal for adults. There is great potential for another statewide initiative in the near future, and we will certainly continue organizing, educating and working with individuals and organizations in Colorado to keep momentum going in the state.
- SAFER is going national! Now that the election season has ended, SAFER is focused primarily on SAFER campaigns on college campuses around the country. We have already begun organizing with students at a number of universities in hopes of being ready to roll when school resumes in January. It is our goal to have as many as 20 schools voting on SAFER-style referenda this spring, so that the college movement is just too big for the press (and the public) to ignore.
- The IRS finally granted SAFER 501(c)(3) federal tax exempt status! A big thanks go out to our good friends at MAPS, which served as our 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor for our first two years of operation.
This means that donations to SAFER can be tax deductible! With the end of the year quickly approaching, please consider taking this opportunity to make a donation to SAFER and writing it off this past year's taxes.
Please visit -- www.saferchoice.org/d_donate.html -- to make a contribution. Or you can send checks or money orders to SAFER, P.O. Box 40332, Denver, CO 80204.
If you give $35 or more, we will send you one of the popular SAFER T-shirts displayed on the Donate page. And if you give $100 or more, we will send you a limited edition SAFER hoodie! This limited run of zip-up sweatshirts will be gray with a SAFER logo on the left chest. If you act fast, these items should arrive on your doorstep before Christmas. (If you want one of these items, be sure to send a follow-up e-mail with your shirt choice, size, and mailing address to mail@saferchoice.org after making your contribution.)
We have also set up a variety of new ways for you to help SAFER raise the funds we need to continue our success. Whether you wish to buy, sell or donate, we have a number of new options!
- Sign up for MissionFish and use it to sell items on E-bay with a percentage (or all) of the proceeds going to SAFER. If you are already a heavy E-bay seller, please consider registering with MissionFish if you have not already done so, then be sure to choose SAFER as your non-profit of choice on any items you sell. Or, if you're not already a seller on E-bay but have some random stuff you've been meaning to get rid of, you can help us by registering and selling those items to benefit SAFER.
- Sign up for iGive and use it when you shop at major online retailers, such as amazon.com and MANY others. This will not add any cost to your purchase, but you can have a portion of the cost of your purchase automatically donated to SAFER. Please register with iGive , choose SAFER as your cause (cause ID = 38371), and then be sure to do any future on-line shopping through the iGive portal.
- If you are in Colorado, donate your vehicle to SAFER and receive a tax write-off. Many people donate old or wrecked vehicles to charities, and now your vehicle can go toward helping SAFER. We are still finalizing this process of getting this program going, so please contact us if you might be interested, or be sure to take note of Cars For Colorado .
With your help and that of other like-minded individuals, we will be able to transition smoothly into the new year and continue educating the public about the fact that marijuana is safer than alcohol and should be treated as such.
Also of note, SAFER is currently seeking a new Webmaster to improve and update (and continue updating) our Web site. This will likely be an unpaid or stipend-based position, so we are generally seeking someone who is dedicated to lending us their time and attention to help us grow SAFER into a larger, more interactive and more responsive organization. This position is potentially available as a for-credit or unpaid internship. SAFER is also seeking a part-time intern for our Denver office (and possibly at schools around the country). This position will also be unpaid, but we encourage students to work with their schools to get college credit for their work. Please contact us if you wish to discuss any of these positions.
Finally, we wish to announce that Steve Fox stepped down from the role of executive director on November 30, and Mason Tvert has resumed the role. Steve took on the position in January 2006 to expand the scope of SAFER, establish it as a permanent fixture in the marijuana reform community and help run the statewide initiative in Colorado. Prior to that he had co-founded SAFER in January 2005, and served in a key advisory role during SAFER's initial efforts on Colorado college campuses and during the Denver election. He will continue to serve the organization in an advisory capacity and on the boards of SAFER and the SAFER Voter Education Fund. SAFER was and is truly Steve's brainchild. He is largely responsible for the organization's past successes, and the groundwork he layed at SAFER will undoubtedly lend to many more in the future. We are sorry to see him go, but we wish him the best in his future endeavors.
Once again, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to getting things rolling around the country and will certainly keep you posted on our progress. As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch any time.
Best wishes this holiday season,
SAFER
